Canvas Health is excited to welcome Kourtney Eichten to the new role of Peer Recovery Specialist. Kourtney will be working in our SHARE Housing located in Forest Lake and with our Forest Lake and North Branch sites. Similar to a Mental Health Certified Peer Specialist, the Substance Abuse Treatment Peer Recovery Specialist helps a person become ready and willing to seek treatment (if needed) and enter recovery by helping the person explore their options for recovery or treatment. Peer Recovery Specialists ask questions, offer insight, and help service recipients on their journey to become whole, resourceful, and capable of choosing what is best for them.
The role of the Peer Recovery Specialist has emerged from the recognition of a need to reconnect substance abuse and mental health treatment to the larger continuum of recovery management. The peer is not a sponsor or a therapist but rather a role model, mentor, advocate, and motivator.
“After receiving services through Canvas Health for years, my newfound sobriety strengthened and my life continued to heal and get better. Canvas Health believed in me before I could believe in myself. I had to learn to trust the process … and it worked! Becoming a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist was a dream that I obtained through the encouragement of my mentors, dedication, and very hard work. I am thrilled to be on the Canvas Health team. We rise by lifting others!” – Kourtney Eichten, Peer Recovery Specialist
