Canvas Health’s Emergency Social Services program provides culturally responsive services to children and families from 4:30 p.m. until 8 a.m. weeknights and 24 hours per day weekends and holidays.
Canvas Health currently provides Emergency Social Services to Anoka County and Scott County.
Crisis workers are contacted by law enforcement, shelters, hospitals, and other first responders when a child is potentially in danger. Staff help by developing safety plans, attending to family strengths and needs, and working to keep the children safely with their families. Crisis workers attend to child’s immediate safety and risks of maltreatment, placing the children in out of home care if that is the only safe option.
Children come to the attention of crisis workers when there is a circumstance in the home that that exposes the child to the possibility of imminent harm due to physical abuse, sexual abuse, or neglect. Staff work to keep the children safe and calm, transitioning them to a safe place.
If necessary, children living in contracted counties are transitioned to the care of County Child Protective Services.
In addition, staff provide information and referrals to social services available in the community to the general public.

I have more than 11 years of child protection experience. As a lead worker, I provide consultation to other staff regarding assessment of safety for children and provide support in ESS’ response to ensure safety after-hours.
