Canvas Health’s Psychological Services program provides comprehensive or targeted psychological evaluation and consultation. These evaluations may assist diagnostic decision making, treatment planning, risk assessment, placement, employment, or court dispositions.
Health care evaluations include neurodevelopmental evaluations (Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Autism, attachment difficulties, attentional problems), and differential diagnosis of complex mental health presentations for children and adults. The goal of the evaluations is to identify the most appropriate interventions for each individual case.
Forensic evaluations include developmental disability, fitness for duty, civil commitment, jail and pre-sentence psychological evaluations, child protection and parental capacity evaluations, and juvenile certification and Rule 20 examinations.

A psychological assessment is a collaborative effort between an individual, their support network (family members, health care providers, teachers, case managers etc.), and the evaluator. Effective partnership, vulnerability, and collaboration through the assessment process can enhance therapeutic understanding, build hope, and provide a pathway to help an individual meet their desired goals.
My training and clinical experience has been focused on providing psychological testing and therapy to individuals with a broad experience of mental health and neurodevelopmental presentations. A primary focus is often the intersection of neurodevelopment, mental health, and systemic factors that impacts an individual’s functioning.
I am a transplant to Minnesota doing my best to figure out the culture around here.

I believe that children do better when they have the tools and environmental support to do so. Because children grow in the context of relationships, I believe that parents often just need help in understanding and entering their child’s world so that they are able to support them. By working closely with both parents and kids, I strive to foster understanding and empathy while we work together to resolve concerns. My goal is to see things from the child’s perspective and provide the individualized support they need at each developmental stage.
I have substantial experience in psychological testing and have worked with clients of all ages. I trained at the University of Minnesota Birth to Three clinic, where I worked closely with families in the adoption and foster care system. I have also done therapy with children and adolescents, with a focus on CBT.

I stress the importance of practices of self-compassion in addressing shame and self-criticism. Additionally, I see the promotion of insight as an important step in demystifying, de-shaming, and empowering clients. This often involves orienting clients to the connection between their thoughts, feelings and behaviors related to their presenting problem. I find that this psychoeducation and insight promotion can create some much-needed separation between client and presenting concern. From here, there is room for attention to be brought to their values, broad life goals, cultural identity, and vital strengths so as not to lose sight of their personhood through their struggles. Despite many of my interventions being focused on adaptive change, I also see the value in acceptance, distress tolerance, and mindful awareness. In this way, I see the role of a therapist as often not fixing client problems but rather helping clients change how they relate to them.
I have more than seven years of experience working in the mental health field. I am currently a student in the University of St. Thomas’ counseling psychology doctoral program (PsyD). My professional experience includes working with adolescents and adults providing individual therapy in outpatient and college counseling center settings. Additionally, I have provided psychological evaluation services in a neuropsychological private practice working with children, teens, and adults.
I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and moved to Minnesota 12 years ago. In my free time, I enjoy playing board games, spending time with friends, horror movies, and trashy TV.

I approach therapy as a collaborative process that is grounded in a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship. I take the time to get to know each of my clients and my work with them starts from where they currently are. In our sessions, I bring compassion, curiosity, humor, and respect for my clients. I aim to create a safe space for them to explore, process, and gain insight into many of their experiences and challenges. I also work with them to cultivate healthy coping skills and build a values-driven life, even when challenges and painful emotions arise.
I encourage my clients to sit with difficult emotions, thoughts, and bodily sensations rather than avoid them using tools such as mindfulness and distress tolerance skills. I also support clients explore their values in life and align their actions with those values to build a meaningful life. Overall, my therapeutic approach is one that balances warmth with honesty, depth with applicability, and acceptance with intention.
I am currently in the final year of my doctoral training in psychology at the University of St. Thomas. I have worked with clients in the mental health field for over four years and I have training in various therapeutic modalities, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) for OCD, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). I adapt my therapeutic approach to suit each client’s unique needs, and I actively engage with each client to ensure that we’re progressing toward the goals that matter most to them.
When I’m not with my clients or working on my doctoral dissertation, I enjoy exploring different restaurants and coffee shops, staying active through yoga, indoor rock-climbing, and working out, and spending quality time with my family and friends.

Dr. Ruth’s professional approach is underscored by a commitment to equity, inclusion, empirically-informed practices, and a decolonized approach to the field of psychology. A decolonized lens recognizes that biases, western cultural values, and oppressive practices have contributed to the development of the field psychology. Dr. Ruth strives to ensure appointments feel collaborative and that cultural values and identities are discussed throughout the appointment. She works to make sure processes and tasks are transparent and barriers to care are discussed and removed whenever possible. Dr. Ruth uses a trauma-informed, sex positive, gender-affirming framework and highlights strengths associated with neurodiversity. She frequently integrates concepts from non-violent communication (NVC) and, more generally, humanistic thought into her work. Dr. Swartwood specializes in applied ethics, sexuality and gender issues, grief and bereavement, and neurodevelopmental differences.
Dr. Ruth’s professional experience has focused on providing psychological evaluations and psychotherapy in community mental health and private practice settings.
