Sandra Woolsey, LPCC, LAMFT, MA

School-Based Mental Health Supervisor

In the field of mental health, trauma and healing, it is important to be strength-based and client/family focused. I meet people where they are and work collaboratively with them to get to where they want to be. I look at situations through a developmental, trauma-informed lens and a systems approach. We do not grow up in isolation; we are a product of our family system-whatever that may look like. This impacts how we see the world and self. Strategies like EMDR, Internal Family Systems and other modalities inform the way I practice and allow a diverse application depending on your needs. At Canvas Health I supervise therapists who are imbedded in schools and providing therapy to all ages and situations, coaching them to become effective, compassionate therapists and strong advocates for your needs.

Therapist, Therapeutic Learning Center (TLC)

My professional philosophy is meeting the client where they are at and providing hope in a situation where others may feel hopeless. In addition, I am committed to serving others and providing a voice to those that otherwise feel voiceless. I hold the belief that it takes one caring adult to impact the life of a child. I find that separating the individual from the behavior gives the opportunity to address feelings of inferiority through encouragement and the reframing of mistaken beliefs. As a result, clients can increase a sense of belonging, externalize problems, and strive in a socially useful way.

Professional Experience

My professional experience entails working with – in prior roles – survivors of domestic and sexual violence. I began my volunteering career working with fellow college and university students – as a student – in building advocacy groups, networks and activities to end violence on college campuses. I transitioned into a role of Instructional Social Worker for Osceola County School District in central Florida. There, I developed a passion for early intervention and prevention measures to help students build their social-emotional skills and awareness of boundaries, consent and general awareness of well-being & safety. I also provided crisis interventions for students & families in need during a difficult transition time related to COVID-19 pandemic.

I transitioned into a different role with Minnesota Independence College & Community (MICC) in Richfield, MN in 2021. There, I provided instruction to college students on social emotional learning and sexual health education. Shortly after, I took up a role with Sexual Violence Center in Minneapolis, MN, and provided prevention workshops and counseling to survivors seeking services.

I am now a School Based Therapist with TAP (Therapeutic Assistance Program) and provide therapeutic assistance to students in need – which include addressing topics of gender, anxiety, depression and many more.

Matt Johnson, LICSW, MSW

Psychotherapist/ Clinic Supervisor

Welcome! My approach to therapy begins with you – your goals, hopes, and dreams for the future. I wholeheartedly believe that everyone has everything they need inside of them. I believe people get stuck when they get disconnected from their internal wisdom. I believe people get stuck in strategies to try and solve their struggles, but those strategies don’t get them what they need or they pay a high price for them. Here you are, taking a bold step towards getting what you need, getting unstuck.

  • Anxiety, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing – EMDR, Trauma, Parenting Issues, Mood Disorders, Severe and Persistent Mental Illness – SPMI, Attachment Disorders, Chronic Pain, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Personality Disorders

Professional Experience

Collaboration is extremely important to me – we are partners working towards your goals, those things you want to be different. I see myself as a guide, walking with you. I bring a variety of tools as a guide. Tools to help shift the mind and patterns of thinking. Tools to help the body shift and release unpleasant experiences, allowing things to pass. Tools to help the whole person to release past traumas and adverse life experiences, that keep them stuck in unhelpful adaptations. My focus is to adapt and customize all of these possible tools for each unique client, building upon all their innate strengths.

While I’m focused on working hard with clients, there’s always room for humor and lightness. I bring my whole self and I invite clients to bring their whole selves into the work, not just the “injured parts”. I love a great joke or an interesting story. I’m endlessly curious about so many things about the world and people. I love movies and eating well. I love traveling near and far – learning about the world, history, and people.

For those looking for a more straightforward description, in my practice I use: Client Centered Humanism, EMDR, CBT, Attachment Focused Trauma Therapy (AFTT-A), Emotional Freedom Technique, Mindfulness, and Somatic Experiencing.

Ruth Swartwood, PhD, LP

Senior Clinical Psychologist

Dr. Ruth’s professional approach is underscored by a commitment to equity, inclusion, empirically-informed practices, and a decolonized approach to the field of psychology. Dr. Ruth strives to ensure appointments feel collaborative and that cultural values and identities are discussed throughout the appointment. She works to make sure processes and tasks are transparent and barriers to care are discussed and removed whenever possible. Dr. Ruth uses a trauma-informed, sex positive, gender-affirming framework and highlights strengths associated with neurodiversity. She frequently integrates concepts from non-violent communication (NVC) and, more generally, humanistic thought into her work. Professional Experience

Within the field of human services, I started working as a Direct Support Professional in a group home with adolescent boys with behavioral and developmental disorders, eventually becoming a Program Supervisor for the same company. I worked with adults and children in two different group homes, and I managed them both at the same time. Eventually, I decided to leave that job and pursue something else. I found Karner Blue Education Center and was referenced there by a family member. After applying, I was recruited to join the EMHC program as an Education Assistant Specialist. I worked as an EAS for 3 years with Karner Blue, for I loved the EMHC program. This inspired me to pursue my LPCC licensure and apply to Canvas Health to continue working within the EMHC program. Currently, I am a Life Skills Counselor for Canvas Health.

Trista Seitzer, MSW, LGSW

School-Based Mental Health Clinical Trainee; STMA Middle School West

Working with youth has always been close to my heart, and I believe wholeheartedly, that by building healthy children, it helps support a lifetime of health. Our world is so very complex, and in navigating all that life has to offer, we can all use extra support, an ear to listen, ideas to work through difficulties, reminders of how we have gotten through the hard times, and how every day, we can work hard to do our best, acknowledge and apologize for our missteps, and work to make healthier choices the next time.

Professional Experience

I have been a Social Worker since 2008 and have worked in several different areas since starting in the school-based program with Canvas Health.

I worked in child protection for about 4.5 years and had some brief experience working with adult foster care licensing as well. I loved working with families and helping them by removing or reducing barriers and reunify children with their caregivers.

I then transitioned to working as a Care Coordination Social Worker for about four years, helping steer individuals to resources, working on client-identified goals, and working with healthcare providers to help support client health. However, I truly missed working with youth, and ended up moving into working with middle schoolers for seven years as a school social worker in rural Minnesota. I worked to promote embedding social and emotional learning in the district to help empower and educate staff on ideas to support students, coordinated with community providers, addressed students crisis as well as attempting to prevent crises, and collaborated with staff, caregivers and community providers to help support students overall.

There are many difficulties and barriers to getting well in the area of mental health. I’m inclined toward a little prescribing and a little therapy. Work should be a joy. Life should be a joy. Pain and suffering should be meaningful, and all our struggles should be turned toward our personal growth and learning. A physician can be a helpful guide toward healing and should help clients learn and grow to continue the work of their own healing.

Twenty years of experience as a psychiatrist. I am kind, patient, and caring. I am well versed in cognitive-behavioral and dynamic psychotherapeutic approaches, and I use these principles to inform me in the guidance of patient-care, in understanding each person and in assisting them in understanding themselves. Psychological healing can turn into a process of excavation. Warda Aden, MA

Outpatient Psychotherapist Clinical Trainee

“It is not the bruises on the body that hurt. It is the wounds of the heart and the scars on the mind.”
As your therapist, my goal is to bring a genuine, authentic, and accepting space to help you navigate through this complex world we live in. I see myself as a guide and my approach is very much rooted in the thought that every individual inherently holds the capacity for growth, resilience, and positive transformation – and I am here to help you see it too.
Authenticity is my strong suit as a therapist. I bring my genuine self into our sessions, whether it involves offering encouragement or providing gentle feedback.
I am deeply committed to supporting individuals across diverse populations, with a particular focus on those who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, Persons of Color), first-generation individuals, and those with intersectional identities. I’m genuinely excited to welcome anyone seeking to collaborate on their healing journey, and I can’t wait to embark on this meaningful path together.

Vanessa Heit, MSW, LICSW

Outpatient Psychotherapist

Just like physical health, we all have emotional/mental health. Life will bring changes, challenges, and stressors that impact our mental health. I believe learning and growing through these experiences can bring increased wellness and life satisfaction; AND it is not easy! Therapy creates an opportunity to check in with our self (and a trained professional) about how we are doing with our mental health. As a therapist, I strive to create a professional yet authentic connection that allows for a sense of safety, hope, and empowerment. I use a whole-person approach and individualize the services I provide based on each unique person and situation, drawing from many theoretical frameworks, therapeutic modalities, and wisdom from past experience. I enjoy meeting people from various backgrounds and hearing from them about what is most important to them at this point in their life. We then partner to clarify goals and the strategies we will use to facilitate healing and forward movement. It is always an honor to be alongside people as they do this important wellness work.

Jenna Amundson, MA

Outpatient Clinical Therapist Trainee

I believe that suffering is a part of life, but also that suffering is a great teacher and nurturer if we allow it. No one can live your life, but you–and still there is a place for you here in the sea of humanity.

Therapy invites you to see yourself in a new, more glorious, often fractured light. It takes the stuck, broken pieces that weigh us down and examines them with fresh eyes, offering hope in the healing journey ahead as those pieces turn into our own solid foundation. Be gentle as you begin this next journey.

Professional Experience

During this phase of my life, I have been a Certified Peer Support Specialist at Canvas Health since 9/2023. I work on the Anoka County Mobile Crisis Team and use my mental health experience to assist Anoka County residents. Prior to Canvas Health, I worked on the Minnesota WARMLINE for 6 months, also as a Peer Support Specialist. I find this work very rewarding; sharing my experience with my own mental health journey, offering information on what I have learned, and finding community resources for my clients. Prior to this I worked for Hennepin County in a number of positions spanning a total of 24 years. My favorite avocation is being part of Vail Place, a nonprofit that assists individuals with serious mental illness located in Hennepin County and soon to be in Ramsey County (5/2024). This organization has been crucial in my recovery from major depression, anxiety, and PTSD. They currently have two clubhouses that offer “members” (clients) a unique community where recovery is expected for everyone. Recovery is unique to everyone, and members are free to define recovery for themselves. A work ordered day, special employment programs, invested staff, and kind caring individuals round out the organization. This community uplifts everyone. Also unique to the community is the decision-making process where everyone has a say, members and staff alike based on consensus. During my 10 years as a member, I have gradually moved into support and leadership roles helping others walk the steps in their own recovery. This allowed me to develop more confidence in my leadership skills, eventually serving on committees, serving on the agency’s Board of Directors, attending an international Clubhouse conference, and now serve on Vail Place’s Ramsey County Advisory Council, helping the new clubhouse open and develop. During 2024-2025 I expect to become part of the Faculty Staff of Clubhouse International. I also serve on NAMI Ramsey County Board of Directors. Also, I often facilitate a Depression/Bipolar Support Group in St Paul.
