This level of treatment is appropriate for individuals who want professional support while continuing to work, attend school, or care for family. Outpatient treatment can help someone explore their relationship with substances, build motivation for change, develop coping and relapse‑prevention skills, and address underlying stress, mental health concerns, or life transitions before use escalates.

Many people choose Level 1.0 care as a proactive step, either after noticing warning signs themselves or receiving feedback from loved ones, employers, or healthcare providers, because it offers structured support, accountability, and education without requiring major disruption to everyday responsibilities.

What is Level 1.0 Substance Use Treatment?

• The least restrictive level of substance use treatment offered by Canvas Health. In more traditional terms, this level of care would be referred to as outpatient treatment.
• It is a versatile level of care, commonly recommended by clinicians as a “step down” or “continuation of care.”

What is the focus of treatment?

• Utilizes evidence-based practices.
• Strong emphasis on relapse prevention education and prevention planning.
• Continued skill-building for craving management.
• Accentuates the importance of daily structure.
• Prioritizes the benefits of a strong sober network.

How is it structured?

• Ideally, a twelve-week program.
• Two-hour groups twice weekly (Monday and Thursday).
• One-hour individual sessions at least once weekly.
• May be customized to fit the needs of clients as program progresses.
• Random urinalysis (UA) sampling throughout the course of treatment.

To help assess the level of care needed, you’ll meet with one of our knowledgable assessors at our Oakdale, Cottage Grove, Forest Lake, North Branch, Stillwater, and Washington and Chisago County Jails.
