Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

It can be difficult for families when their children struggle with disruptive behavior, especially when that behavior leads to accidental physical harm and/or getting kicked out of daycare or preschool.

PCIT is an evidence-based treatment for young children (2-6 years) with behavioral problems. Through real-time coaching, you’ll learn how to give clear directions and follow through in ways that increase your child’s willingness to listen and follow instructions. You’ll gain tools to help your child manage big feelings and behaviors, leading to fewer meltdowns and more peaceful moments at home.

When your family participates in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), you may start to notice meaningful improvements at home, including:
-Fewer and shorter tantrums
-Less attention-seeking behavior
-A decrease in aggressive or destructive outbursts
-More cooperation and fewer power struggles

How it works:
During PCIT sessions, you and your child are in a playroom together. Meanwhile, your therapist observes from a nearby room using a one-way mirror or live video. You’ll wear a small earpiece (like a Bluetooth device), and your therapist will gently coach you in real time, offering encouragement and guidance as you practice new parenting skills.

What is the timeline for PCIT treatment:
With consistent attendance and homework completion, PCIT can be completed within 12-20 sessions, though treatment is not time-limited. Treatment is considered complete when you have become proficient in both sets of skills and rate your child’s behavior within normal limits on a behavior rating scale.

“When my 3-year-old got kicked out of daycare, I didn’t know what to do. Canvas Health’s staff and the PCIT program helped me learn parenting techniques that got my family back on track and helped keep my child feeling safe and secure.” – Parent client

Canvas Health also can offer PCIT using the older child protocol to help children ages 7-10!
