Mercedes Sherwood, MA

Psychotherapist Clinical Trainee

As a children’s therapist, I believe that every child is a whole person and that meaningful growth happens within the context of secure relationships, family, and community. My approach is grounded in attachment theory, strengths-based practice, and a holistic, family-centered perspective. I view therapy as a collaborative process, not only between the therapist and child, but also with the caregivers and family members who are a part of the child’s life. I strive to meet each child and family where they are, honoring their unique experiences, strengths, needs, and goals. My goal is to create a safe, supportive environment where children feel seen, understood, and empowered to express themselves, develop new skills, and build resilience. At the same time, I support caregivers in strengthening connection, communication, and understanding within the family system. I believe that every child and family brings their own unique strengths and wisdom into the therapeutic space. It is a privilege to walk alongside them as they navigate challenges, deepen relationships, build on their strengths, and create meaningful, lasting change. My role is not to provide all the answers, but to support children and families in discovering their own capacities for growth, healing, and connection.

Professional Experience

I recently graduated with my Master of Arts from the University of Minnesota Institute of Child Development, with an emphasis on Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health, attachment, and development. Prior to becoming a therapist, I worked in a day treatment setting supporting children with neurodevelopmental differences, behavioral concerns, early trauma, and developmental challenges. Additionally, I worked as a Children’s Mental Health Case Manager, helping children ages 0-18 and their families access the supports and resources needed to promote mental health and well-being. During my clinical internship at Canvas, I worked in the Early Childhood Behavioral Assistance program completing DC:0-5 assessments, providing individual and family therapy, and receiving training in Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). I have also received training in Circle of Security Parenting (COSP), which has strengthened my understanding of attachment and the significant role secure relationships play in healthy development.
