Professional Experience

During this phase of my life, I have been a Certified Peer Support Specialist at Canvas Health since 9/2023. I work on the Anoka County Mobile Crisis Team and use my mental health experience to assist Anoka County residents. Prior to Canvas Health, I worked on the Minnesota WARMLINE for 6 months, also as a Peer Support Specialist. I find this work very rewarding; sharing my experience with my own mental health journey, offering information on what I have learned, and finding community resources for my clients. Prior to this I worked for Hennepin County in a number of positions spanning a total of 24 years. My favorite avocation is being part of Vail Place, a nonprofit that assists individuals with serious mental illness located in Hennepin County and soon to be in Ramsey County (5/2024). This organization has been crucial in my recovery from major depression, anxiety, and PTSD. They currently have two clubhouses that offer “members” (clients) a unique community where recovery is expected for everyone. Recovery is unique to everyone, and members are free to define recovery for themselves. A work ordered day, special employment programs, invested staff, and kind caring individuals round out the organization. This community uplifts everyone. Also unique to the community is the decision-making process where everyone has a say, members and staff alike based on consensus. During my 10 years as a member, I have gradually moved into support and leadership roles helping others walk the steps in their own recovery. This allowed me to develop more confidence in my leadership skills, eventually serving on committees, serving on the agency’s Board of Directors, attending an international Clubhouse conference, and now serve on Vail Place’s Ramsey County Advisory Council, helping the new clubhouse open and develop. During 2024-2025 I expect to become part of the Faculty Staff of Clubhouse International. I also serve on NAMI Ramsey County Board of Directors. Also, I often facilitate a Depression/Bipolar Support Group in St Paul.
